72 souls have perished in a tragic accident on a roadway in southern Ethiopia. In the state of Sidama, a wedding truck plummeted from an overhead bridge into a river because of its burden. As a result of the accident, 68 men and 3 women lost their lives in the Sunday evening accident, around 5:30 pm. local time, roughly 300 kilometers from Addis Ababa.

It was said that the distressed truck held 76 persons, including guests to the wedding and day laborers. The damages were great due to the huge boulders collected into the river, filling the rest of the passengers including the driver. 5 people survived, two of whom are severely injured and under treatment at Hawassa Referral Hospital.
Road accidents happen often in Ethiopia, mainly due to the poor maintenance of roads and vehicles which are overloaded. This incident has once again raised the business of calling for improvement in road safety in the country.
