Saudi Scholar Assim Alhakeem Sparks Debate Over Remarks on Protests Against Oppressive Rulers

The famous Islamic scholar of Saudi Arabia Assim Alhakeem has erupted with a scorching row on social media when he spoke against protests and rebellion against tyrant Muslim leaders.

Replying to a trending question on Twitter about whether protests would be permitted in Islam against the post-election oppression that is to be understood in Pakistan, Alhakeem declared that protests or rebel acts against a tyrannic ruler are not permitted in Islam.

In his tweet, Alhakeem stated, “It is not permissible to rebel against the tyrant leader or to protest or to demonstrate! The people are not interested in what the Quran or the Sunnah says. They want to follow their whims and desires even if this burns the whole country!”

This reaction was immediately answered to by a local who mentioned in his tweet that 300 Pakistanis had, reportedly, been killed and thousands more arrested due to the recent political protests in Pakistan, all the while asking how the text of Allah’s words could justify this form of opposition.

Alhakeem’s strike has presented to the world controversy and appreciation. Some mean that his text nullifies all efforts to stand against injustice through personal experience and authentic facts about the historical role of speaking truth to power in Islam.

Some others contended with his viewpoint that disturbances come into being when public demonstration is bolstered with expectations of the power-to-be for chaos-making to establish their position for further developments later, which is against the Islamic concept of order and peace in society.
