Population Control Essential for Economic Stability

According to federal minister Muhammad Aurangzeb during the meeting with the National Assembly Standing Committee on Finance, unless the country succeeds in controlling the overgrowing population, all economic reforms will simply be meaningless.

He described it as one of the most serious challenges that has been undermining Pakistan’s long-term economic stability.

The minister also focused on all the improvements in recent economic conditions, especially the major shift from deficits to surpluses in the primary and current accounts and the accumulation of foreign reserves sufficient to cover two and a half months’ imports.

Inflationary decline saw a drastic change from 38 to 5 percent while the policy rate dropped from 22 percent to 15 percent, leading to the development of private sector credit growth.

He stated that along with all of the privatization aspects, pending IMF conditionalities needed to be completed. The government was also working with the World Bank on a climate change program that will sprawl into 10 years, he added.
