The Punjab government has now ordered making Vehicle fitness certificates compulsory for all vehicles in the province-public or private- in the most drastic action taken against the growing menace of smog. The move aims at reducing vehicular emissions-the biggest cause of air pollution in this region.
The Embarking the Provincial Environment Protection Department (EPD) has now issued orders on all the concerned officials such as secretaries of provincial ministries and commissioners to adhere strictly to the orders.: “The initiative proves the government’s commitment to overcoming a deteriorating environmental crisis that Punjab has endured for years. ”

To facilitate the transition, the provincial government now puts a deadline for vehicle inspections, requiring every vehicle to have its fitness certificate by the 30th of next month. Owners must have their vehicles inspected so that they won’t be penalized while not forgetting that they have a part to play in improving air quality.
It is a comprehensive program vying the combat environmental degradation for sustainability in the province. Stiff measures with a healthy amount of surveillance would go a long way in ensuring this.
