Azma Bokhari Calls for Action Against Deepfake Abuse Targeting Women

The Punjab Minister for Information and Broadcasting, Azma Bokhari, has said that deepfake videos weaponize against women.

In an interview with a French news agency, she noted that there was widespread ignorance regarding the misuse of deepfakes in Pakistan. Sharing her personal experience, she said that she has been forced to repeatedly clarify in court hearings that a video being presented as hers was actually generated through deepfake technology.

“But one has to reform the entire judicial system and investigating system for effectively addressing such issues.”

“This is the time to really hone the capacity building of the cybercrime unit,” she said.

Bokhari, meanwhile, defended the Punjab Defamation Law, which had come under fire for being a muzzle on dissent. She insisted that now its relevance, indeed, can be better understood and appreciated.

Yet she somehow managed to make it through with the support of her family, who stood by her during the ordeal, stressing that deepfake technology is a dangerous weapon often trained solely on women.
