Punjab Govt. Introduces 400 Electric Buses to Combat Lahore’s Smog.

The Punjab government has recently announced the introduction of 400 electric buses as part of its moves to combat the smog in Lahore for air improvement. This was disclosed by Senior Provincial Minister Marriyum Aurangzeb who intends to reduce pollution in the city through technological reforms and policy reforms. These buses would fall under the 10-year anti-smog policy and help transition public transport to greener options.

In the first instance, 27 of them will be made available by January 2025 in Lahore, from a total of 400 supposed to be running. It complements the more comprehensive plan of switching 5.2 million motorbikes in Lahore to electric ones for cleaner air.

Other anti-smog government measures include closings of factories with high smoke emissions, brick kiln regulations, and environment-friendly agricultural practices. With these, air quality in Lahore is expected to improve significantly and is also set to reduce smog by 38% according to previous records.
