Uzbekistan and IAEA Agree on Roadmap for Nuclear Technology Cooperation

Uzbekistan and the IAEA have developed an exhaustive roadmap to better cooperation between their countries in nuclear technology peaceful development. This agreement was achieved when Shavkat Mirziyoyev, President of Uzbekistan, held a face-to-face meeting with Rafael Grossi, IAEA Director General, where both developed bilateral ties and discussed other new practical partnerships.

Uzbekistan has been a member of the IAEA since 1994 and in these three decades has signed over forty joint projects with the agency. Currently, five projects are ongoing with respect to the legal and institutional framework enhancement of the country, focusing on nuclear science and healthcare applications in other related areas.

President Mirziyoyev praises extraordinary results from the meetings of the IAEA with various Uzbek ministries, agencies, and scientific organizations. During the meeting, some major areas of consideration in future collaboration were identified: building up the capacity and competence of national agencies, training qualified personnel in sectors pertinent to nuclear activities, and modernizing nuclear energy, agriculture, water utilization, health, and environmental programs under IAEA’s auspices.

The issue concerned both parties agreeing to develop a united roadmap for strengthening global cooperation on the peaceful use of nuclear technology.

Meanwhile, Atomstroyexport of Russia and the Directorate for NPP Construction of Uzbekistan have signed a contracted construction of a small-capacity nuclear power plant (SCNPP) in the Jizzakh region of Uzbekistan. The plant is to be constructed with Russian-designed ASMP’s six reactors of 55 MW each, making a total capacity of 330 MW. Rosatom will be the primary contractor, with contributions from local Uzbek companies.

The vast improvement in relations between Uzbekistan and the IAEA, and also in the construction plan of the nuclear power plant, highlights Uzbekistan’s commitment to using nuclear technology for peaceful purposes in energy needs and sustainability.
