The CMU was activated by the Pakistani government in a bid to provide help to citizens against the Syrian conflict, according to Express News. The Syrian army, on note, informed its officers early this morning that their country is no longer under the regime of President Bashar al-Assad, following a swift rebel offensive that reached Damascus.
They have been able to include Pakistanis in Syria and their relatives to report to the Crisis Management Unit of Mihili Foreign Affairs: Telephone: 051-9207887. Email: cmu1@mofa.gov.pk. Reports say that if the current situation follows through, President Assad might have left Damascus, as there was hardly any kind of military movement within the boundaries of the capital. The rebel forces have entered the city, with claims that they now control areas of significant interest. Thousands of Syrians seem to rejoice in the streets of cities while chanting “Freedom,” celebrating the possible end of the Messiah’s rule over Syria.
The head of the Syrian opposition group, Hadi al-Bahra, confirms that the capital is now “without Bashar al-Assad.” Pakistan’s Foreign Office had earlier advised against non-essential travel to Syria on December 6 due to security conditions. Those presently in Syria are advised to exercise maximum precautions and to remain in frequent contact with the embassy.
