His Excellency Geir Pedersen United Nations special envoy for Syria spoke of the fall of the regime by Bashar-al-Assad, which he called a watershed moment in the history of Syria. After 14 years of unyielding suffering and loss, Pedersen cautiously hopes that a new chapter will open in which all Syrians will get peace, reconciliation, dignity, and inclusion.
He emphasized the new vision for displaced Syrians trying to return home, reuniting families separated by war, and reminding them about justice for all the wrongfully detained. After losing control of Damascus to anti-regime groups, Assad deserted Syria. It marks the end of the Baath Party regime after being in power since 1963.

This downfall came after the fall of Aleppo into the hands of anti-regime groups. Noting such challenges, Pedersen said that there is an opportunity for renewal. His appeal to all armed actors is to have good conduct, protect civilians, and preserve public institutions. He also called upon the Syrians to prioritize dialogue, unity, and respect for international humanitarian law and the tenets of human rights.
Pedersen stressed the need for joint action to bring peace and dignity to all in memory of those who have suffered and to create a Syria that is a reality of justice, liberty, and prosperity for all.
