Today is the 53rd martyrdom anniversary of Sowar Muhammad Hussain Shaheed, Nishan-e-Haider (NH), for his heroic actions during the war against Bangladesh in 1971. He was born in Dhok Pir Bakhsh on June 18, 1949, and joined the 20 Lancers as a driver on September 3, 1966.

Sowar Muhammad Hussain played a vital role in the entire Zafarwal – Shakargarh Sector during the 1971 war. He located enemy tanks from a minefield in Harar Khurd and directed flawless fire of recoilless rifles, destroying sixteen enemy tanks. His courageous actions had an enormous effect on the battlefield.
He was martyred at the age of 22 on December 10, 1971, while he was shot by a machine gun while stopping enemy troops from mining activity. He became the very first foot soldier of the Pakistan Army to be decorated with Nishan-e-Haider, the highest military award for extraordinary gallantry.
