The security forces and police in India have beefed up vigilance following the discovery of a balloon, resembling an airplane, with “Pakistan International Airlines” and the Pakistani flag, near Khajuwala in Rajasthan’s Bikaner district. The incident happened on Saturday, just a few kilometers from the border with Pakistan, marking the third occasion of such an event in 35 days.

Local villagers reported a two-foot-long toy-like balloon as soon as it was sighted and informed the police as well as the Border Security Force (BSF). Preliminary investigations show that the balloon does not carry any device or equipment typically associated with surveillance. However, the matter is being treated quite seriously as it is perceived in the context of cross-border drug smuggling.
“Possibility of these balloons being used as test or diversionary tactic by the smugglers cannot be ruled out,” said an investigating police officer.
