The Syrian Civil Defense, also known as the White Helmets, are working on clearing up their mass grave recently discovered close to the Baghdad Bridge in Damascus. Anadolu documented that the grave site contained trenches filled with human remains and sacks marked with prison codes, which indicates the possibility of death by torture or infamous prisons such as Sednaya. White Helmets teams had earlier cordoned off the site and started recovering human remains, believed to have been victims of the Assad regime’s brutal torture.

This mass grave is aimed at an ongoing search and recovery mission within Syria. Concerning the fall of the Ba’ath Party regime on Dec. 8, Ammar Selmo, an Executive Board member of the Syrian Civil Defense, said they mobilized after receiving reports about human remains. “The site is indeed disturbing and horrifying, something that is the reflection of the state of Syria,” he said. The bodies buried were disrespectfully found in flour sacks. In preliminary findings, some remains may belong to detainees, though they lack identification.
