The arms sale, at $385 million, consists of military equipment and support to improve Taiwan’s defense capability comes in the wake of increasing military activities in the Taiwan Strait, with Taiwan reporting increased presence of Chinese military aircraft and naval assets in nearby waters.

Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Lin Jian criticized denouncing the grandiose meetings of Taiwan leaders with officials from the US, which damaged the territorial integrity of China. Lin also called upon the US to drop all official contacts with Taiwan and halt supporting secessionist activities.
Beijing has vowed irreconcilable countermeasures against the arms sale, which may include military exercises to reinforce that claim. The tense atmosphere shows no sign of dissipating as both sides use strong words and actions that could have a drawback on regional stability.
