SCO Secretary-General Zhang Ming Highlights Future Growth and Solidarity

According to Zhang Ming, the outgoing secretary-general of the SCO, in his farewell address last week, the future of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization is full of hope, growth, and solidarity.

“HISTORY WILL PROVE THE STRONG VITALITY OF THE SHANGHAI SPIRIT,” Zhang Ming emphasized in his address. He added that member countries would be facing a very heavy and significant responsibility in the future.

China, which currently holds the rotating presidency of the SCO, will host the 25th SCO Summit next year. On this occasion, Chinese Assistant Foreign Minister Liu Bin said that the country is prepared to act along with the presidency slogan, ‘Upholding the Shanghai Spirit: SCO on the Move’. Liu specifically mentioned China’s readiness for cooperation with all member states to implement the important consensus reached by the leaders.

Liu also expressed Beijing’s willingness to improve the organization’s mechanism to address security threats and other challenges, as well as to develop a blueprint of the SCO Development Strategy through 2035.

He became secretary-general on January 1, 2022; the three-year term he serves has brought the induction of two new member states into the organization, as well as eight dialogue partners, making it 10 member states, 2 observer nations, and 14 dialogue partners.
