PTI Criticizes Military Court Trials, Vows Legal Challenge

Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Information Secretary Sheikh Waqas Akram brutally criticized the trials of civilians in military courts as being against international laws and a frontal attack on fundamental rights. While addressing the media, Akram revealed intentions of challenging the military trials in court, making efforts to silence the political opposition.

Akram went on to make accusations of delaying judgment in the ongoing Al-Qadir Trust case. “We demand answers as to why the decision has been gone over this. Where is this judgment being written? This case is about acquittal-there’s really nothing in it,” he said. Accused by Akram of an instance of political vendetta, the £190 million case was described as being aimed at putting the former Prime Minister, Imran Khan, and his wife, Bushra Bibi, in the dock.

Akram alleged that the government had misused legal processes to deny dissent, which, according to him, would constitute political persecution. “The government is prepared to violate international legal standards and norms in its destructive undertaking to eliminate its rivals,” he alleged.

The PTI leader to take the battle against what he claimed to be a conspiracy aimed at destabilizing Pakistan’s economy has continued and pledged that his party would continue the fight for justice and openness, at the same time condemning the £190 million case as a blight for which international eyewitnesses have already been mobilized. “This case is now being internationally debated as an instance of political persecution,” stated Akram.

Akram’s comments come at a time when political tensions are running high and many people are talking about the controversial handling of cases against PTI leaders and supporters. The PTI has consistently alleged that this government misuses the legal machinery to weaken the opposition parties and curtail democratic freedoms. The political ground has remained much embroiled with uncertainty as PTI vows to contest the government action above and beyond the domestic front.
