Netanyahu Orders Military Action Against Houthis

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu proclaimed on Monday that he had ordered the army to “destroy” the infrastructure of Iran-backed Houthis after the Yemeni group shot missiles toward Israel last week. According to Netanyahu, “I have instructed our forces to destroy the Houthis’ infrastructure because anyone who tries to harm us will be targeted with full force. We will continue to crush the forces of evil with ingenuity and strength, even if it takes time,” told the Israeli parliament.

He also mentioned that the negotiations with Hamas about hostages were progressing, although he did not indicate in any terms how long it would take until these efforts would produce results. During his speech in the Knesset, Netanyahu called attention to military achievements recently attained by Israel on several fronts and pointed out that military pressure on Hamas had had its effect in forcing the leadership to soften the tone of demands made previously.

Netanyahu also emphasized Israel’s standing as a “regional power” and said he would want to take the Abraham Accords even further adrift with the United States’ help. According to him, the war in Gaza created opportunities for reaching new peace accords with Arab countries and was indeed going to transform the geography of the Middle East. “Moderate Arab nations consider Israel to be a regional power and a potential ally. I want to seize this opportunity to the fullest. Together with our American friends, I plan to expand the Abraham Accords and thus change even more dramatically the situation in the Middle East,” he said.
