Pakistan began its official 2 year term as a temporary member of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC), on January 1, 2025. This is the eighth time that Pakistan has entered into the council, giving an important opportunity to highlight its influence in key international issues with this platform.
Pakistan shall preside over the Council for July 2025, an important forum for Pakistan that will define agendas and shape debates. Likewise, Pakistan shall also involve itself in the Islamic State and Al Qaeda Sanctions Committee for the listing of persons and groups as terrorists and sanctions.

This moment coincides with a very crucial juncture in global geopolitics, which is characterized by increased intensity in conflict areas such as Gaza, Kashmir, and Syria. With Pakistan’s long-standing position on Palestine as well as Kashmiris’ right to self-determination, it is expected that these issues would be particularly flagged during the country’s tenure.
For Islamabad, navigating the divided state of global politics and growing polarized reality inside the council would be a big task. Finding a balance between the principled stances of Islamabad and the realities of its limited influence in conflicts demanding states’ power over the multilateral path would be the task.
