PTA Chairman Addresses Internet Capacity and Speed Concerns

Chairman Telecommunication Authority (PTA) Major General (Retd) Hafeez Rehman on Wednesday assured the Senate Standing Committee on IT and Telecom that sharks can’t bite the submarine cables.

He informed me that there are seven submarine cables soon to be connected to Pakistan’s mainframe this year, including the much-awaited 2Africa cable. While chairman informed, us about an additional four cables planned for the coming years to improve the capacity and reliability of the internet.

He also expressed optimism that many would soon start applying for registration of their private networks before the regulator.

One senator said that Pakistan had the worst internet speeds in the region and noted that the country ranked 97th in the global speed index. He went on to lament how voice notes could be downloaded with a lot of difficulty given the speed of the internet.

On this, the committee was informed that the Ministry of Interior and the Ministry of Law would be asked for input on this issue.
