Minister Directs BoI to Facilitate Chinese Investors

The issues of Special Economic Zones also need to be resolved on a priority basis by Federal Minister Abdul Aleem Khan on the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

All problems under the heads of Special Economic Zones SEZ in Pakistan must be handled on a war footing by the Federal Minister for Investment, Abdul Aleem Khan, specific to long-standing issues in the industrial zones in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. He directed our team to make the grid connection functional within three days. He contacted the Governor of the State Bank to appoint a Focal Person for investors to resolve outstanding issues.

Immediate Directives for SEZs

“The Minister emphasized the complexities and problems faced by investors into certain categories particularly the power provision. Immediately, he went for localized solutions to the problems of Century Steel Group in the Peshawar SEZ as directed by the Prime Minister. Senior officials at the Board of Investment have been directed to team up with the KPK provincial government and other relevant institutions including diplomats from China to resolve problems in a cooperative manner.”

Facilities for Chinese investors

The board of investment is committed to providing the entire land in complete facilities to the Chinese investor for sale and transfer in SEZs and for complaints raised the CRBC, which features general taxation exemptions on duty and tax holidays. The Economic Zone Policy features, tax holidays, and import duty exemptions were discussed at a high-level meeting in which Minister Abdul Aleem Khan said that the Prime Minister is quite cognizant of these matters and that mistakes of the past should be corrected to avoid such negligence in the future.

Collaborative work

The Governor of State Bank, Chief Secretary of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Directors of CRBC, Federal Secretary of Privatization Board directors, and relevant senior officials attended the discussion. They informed us about SEZs under NEPRA. Under the duress of the minister-administered change of Abdul Aleem Khan, the provincial government, Board of Investment, and other departments have also resolved to expedite the speedy resolution of pending issues of the last five years.

Conclusion: The issue to be brought in Special Economic Zones of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa is now done and sealed it will be living evidence for the government intending to facilitate investments and address investor concerns. It will be hoped that the cooperative endeavors will prove to be a significant turning point in the future of SEZs.
