FIFA and Qatar Launch $50 Million Legacy Fund to drive global social impact

A historic US 50 million dollar FIFA World Cup 2022 Legacy Fund is being launched with Qatar to deliver world-changing social programs. FIFA is working with other world organizations like WHO, WTO, and UNHCR to make this event last longer than football. It focuses on important issues like support for refugees, public health, education, and development in football.

The Legacy Fund, cast during a star-studded virtual event featuring FIFA President Gianni Infantino and leaders from WHO, WTO, and UNHCR, is centered on four major pillars: Refugees: Programs under UNHCR will provide better access to services, as well as better social inclusion and self-sufficiency for these most venerable communities.

Public Health: Programs like Beat the Heat, in relation to WHO, will reduce health risks of extreme heat and other climate-related transfers.

Education: FIFA and WTO will jointly support the Women Exporters in the Digital Economy Fund, which empowers women entrepreneurs with digital tools and access. Football Development: Aspire Academy and FIFA’s Talent Development scheme, fronted by Arsène Wenger, will scout and develop youth talent in developing countries. “This Legacy Fund is the epitome of the long-term impact of the FIFA World Cup,” FIFA President Gianni Infantino further stressed.

It provides direct responses to the most important challenges that the world is facing while taking advantage of the powerful solidarity of football. “The objective of this project is to make relevant change in both the region and the globe,” said H. E. Hassan Al Thawadi, Secretary General of Qatar’s Supreme Committee for Delivery & Legacy, expressing the long-term vision: “This World Cup was more than 28 days of football.”

UNHCR’s Filippo Grandi dubbed the fund as a savior to uprooted communities. At the same time, WHO’s Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus and WTO’s Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala brought attention to this fund to improve health and empower women entrepreneurs. The fund will be implemented in collaboration with Qatar’s Supreme Committee. It will, therefore, have an international outreach for this historic initiative.
