Da Afghanistan Breshna Sherkat (DABS)-the state power company of Afghanistan has renewed its power import agreement with Uzbekistan until the end of 2025. The signing of this deal, which is likely to be very essential for Afghanistan country where unreliable electricity has affected millions, by Abdul Bari Umar, the Taliban’s acting head of DABS, and representatives from the National Electricity Company of Uzbekistan.

The Ministry of Energy and Water under the Taliban regime says the country needs 1,500 megawatts, out of which about 720 megawatts are imported while the rest is produced domestically. It’s mainly because a very limited capacity exists within Afghanistan itself that is turned to surrounding neighboring countries for power supply. Residents of Kabul and elsewhere suffer for hours on end without electricity, something pretty annoying.
And, DABS, in one of its recent communications, mentions disruptions caused to electricity imports from Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan due to technical and storm-related problems, respectively. However, both issues have been resolved now and electricity transmission to Afghanistan resumed. The extension of the agreement with Uzbekistan marks a significant step toward fulfilling energy needs in Afghanistan, although it still begs for longer-term solutions for increased domestic production of electricity.
