Amazon Sued for Excluding D.C. Neighborhoods from Prime Delivery

The email said the attorney general’s office would be suing the tech giant while disclosing the above information. The complaint is all about two neighborhoods in Washington D.C. that did not qualify for this speedy Prime Delivery service provided by Amazon, while residents in those areas are still charged for it.

Attorney General Brian Schwalb alleged that Amazon had secretly removed those two ZIP codes, 20019 and 20020, from its Prime fast delivery service for about 48,000 subscribers who pay the full subscription price. According to a statement by the Attorney General’s office, Amazon decided in June last year to stop using its branded fleet of trucks for Prime deliveries in these neighborhoods.

Residents in these neighborhoods, although they are paying the same monthly subscription fee, do not have access to the same delivery speeds as other districts that use different ZIP codes. Customers pay $14.99 monthly for this subscription. Customers fail to realize that exclusions like these may be the reason behind their shipping delay and hence mislead themselves.

“Amazon is charging tens of thousands of hard-working Ward 7 and 8 residents for an expedited delivery service it promises but does not provide,” said Schwalb. “We are suing to stop this deceptive conduct and make sure District residents get what they’re paying for.”.
