Antony Blinken, the Secretary of State in the US, will be traveling to South Korea next week about political turmoil. This visit is expected to collapse during a time when this country is trying to come to terms with the consequences of President Yoon Suk Yeol’s failed decree on martial law on December 3, which ultimately led to his impeachment and ongoing confrontation with those trying to have him arrested.

To enhance the Korean alliance, cooperation with Japan, and other regional and global issues, Blinken plans to meet Cho Tae-yul, his South Korean counterpart. This trip would likely see Blinken making his last stop on this international tour for President-elect Donald Trump was beckoned back to office.
With the president’s powers suspended pending a constitutional court decision on his impeachment, the political damage in South Korea has placed Finance Minister Choi Sang-mok as acting president. The situation remains tense, with investigators attempting to enforce an arrest warrant for Yoon, which expires on January 6, the same day Blinken is scheduled to meet Cho.
