California Wildfires Set to End, But Flash Flood Danger Looms

An impending weekend storm is set to provide relief to California wildfires, but concerns over flash floods loom large. The Los Angeles areas that were recently scorched by fires such as Palisades and Eaton are under flood watch alerts. These watches caution against the possibilities of mudslides in burn scar areas.

The National Weather Service has tagged these odds, saying there is a 10%-20% chance of significant flooding and debris flow, “It’s not forecasted to be one of the more likely scenarios, but since the storm is quite uncertain in where and how strong it will hit, those are some of the reasons we’re prepping for it.”

Rainfall in Los Angeles County will commence Saturday afternoon and will escalate into Sunday. Certain areas may see up to 1 inch of rainfall, with the possibility of more as the storm intensifies Sunday. Winter storm warnings are in effect for the San Gabriel and San Bernardino mountains, where snow accumulations could reach 18 inches above 6,000 feet.

Residents in the possible path of mudflows are urged to take precautions, including the placement of sandbags.
