CJ Yahya Afridi to lead judicial commission meetings on judge appointments today

Today Chief Justice of Pakistan Mr. Justice Yahya Afridi will preside over two important key meetings of the Judicial Commission. The topics to be discussed will add further discussions on appointing judges in the High Courts of Sindh and Peshawar and will devote deliberations on including Justice Shahid Bilal in the constitutional bench.

In the first commission meeting, there will be a discussion on 13 candidates for appointments in the Sindh High Court. Also, three more session judges and six lawyers have been proposed for appointment in the Peshawar High Court.

The second meeting is regarding Justice Shahid Bilal’s possible inclusion into the constitutional bench, considered highly important for judicial proceedings.

Meeting participants

Some of the notable invitees were Justices Mansoor Ali Shah, Muneeb Akhtar, Ameenuddin, Jamal Mandokhel, and others. The members included the Law Minister, Attorney General, president of Pakistan Bar Council Akhtar Hussain, Senator Farooq H. Naek, Sheikh Aftab, female member Roshan Khurshid, opposition members Senator Ali Zafar and Barrister Gohar Ali Khan.

Controversy Over Appointment Procedures

A day earlier, Justice Mansoor Ali Shah raised concerns about ongoing appointments. In two letters to Chief Justice Yahya Afridi and the Judicial Commission, Justice Shah called for the meetings to be postponed until proper rule and criteria were underlined for judicial appointments. He stressed that chaotic fairness and merit should be the hallmark of all future appointments.

The results of the meetings this day will considerably affect the judiciary, particularly as it will touch on some long-term issues raised concerning judicial appointments and one on the other user.
