Deputy PM Ishaq Dar to Attend ECO Meeting in Iran

The Minister of Economic Affairs, Ishaq Dar, today departed for Iran where he is expected to attend the 28th Meeting of the Council of Ministers of the Economic Cooperation Organization.

In his address delivered at the meeting, the Deputy Prime Minister will reiterate Pakistan’s commitment to the ECO charter and bring forth the potential of greater connectivity in the region through the development of rail and road networks, liberalization of visa regimes, and simplification of border procedures.

He will reiterate Pakistan’s concern about conflict in the Middle East that threatens the peace and security of the region. He will sign the Charter for the ECO Clean Energy Center.

This Deputy Prime Minister will also hold meetings with participating ministers and other dignitaries on the sidelines of the ministerial meeting.

At the beginning of this year, from Iran, Pakistan was channeled towards boosting imports, including meat, rice, and various agricultural products.

In other developments, Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar emphasized the government’s actions concerning the Iran-Pakistan gas pipeline with national interests above all else and deter external interference.

To another question regarding the Iran-Pakistan gas pipeline, replied the deputy prime, with Pakistan being a sovereign state, it would make decisions in the best national interests and not allow any interference in international commitments.

The visit strongly underlined both countries’ commitment to cooperation in the energy domain, notably through trade in electricity, power transmission lines, and the Iran-Pakistan Gas Pipeline Project.
