President-elect Donald Trump of the U.S. distinguished the abandonment by Russia of Syrian president, Bashar al-Assad, as a cause for the downfall of Assad. In an entry in Truth Social, Trump articulated Moscow’s initial protection of Assad as something that should never have happened in his opinion, and then at some point was lost by the country due to the war with Ukraine.
“Assad is gone. He has fled his country. His protector, Russia, Russia, Russia, led by President Vladimir Putin, was not interested in protecting him any longer,” Trump wrote. He added that Russia lost interest in Syria because of the Ukraine war, which “never should have started, and could go forever.”

He is set to be sworn in for his second term on January 20, and then he said, “is China and in the case of Iran, two of the other key allies of Assad, both of which are in pretty bad shape due to the Ukraine war and the economy.” His statements came just hours after Syrian opposition fighters wrested control of the presidential palace, setting to an end the 53 years of family rule by Assad.
The fast-paced onslaught by the faction popularly called “the Operations Room to Conquer Damascus” had ended with storming the city, taking with it joyous celebrations to the streets. Trump, who wired a pledge to do away with war in Ukraine on resuming power, met on Saturday with Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskiy in Paris.
“Depending on country counting, there could be hundreds of thousands dead and injured from both Russia and Ukraine, and the people of Ukraine have lost many civilians as well,” Trump stated. He called for an immediate ceasefire, stating, “I know Vladimir well. This is his time to act. China can help. The World is waiting!”
