Eiffel Tower Evacuated on Christmas Eve Due to Lift Technical Issue

Last night, the Eiffel Tower was emptied because of the activation of a fire alarm due to a technical glitch in one of its lifts.

On Tuesday morning, emergency services rushed to the scene after about 1,000 tourists were ushered from the site, which is now being investigated by French emergency services.

According to The Daily Mail, there was a confirmation from a spokesman for SETE, the management company of the tower, regarding a short circuit in the elevator power rail from the second level of the monument to its top. The fire alarm was activated at 10:50 AM to follow protocol for evacuation.

There was no fire and no public was in danger,” the spokesperson said. Investigation into the incident has been set in motion, and the monument was progressively reopened later in the day.

The tower measures 1,083 feet and is undoubtedly one of the most popular monuments in the world, with an estimated six million people visiting it every year. After the 2019 fire at Notre Dame, fire safety measures around Paris monuments have increased.
