In a shocking incident, Sonia, one of the African elephants in Safari Park Karachi, is dead. Park officials, informed earlier, said Sonia used to eat healthily and was quite normal on the evening before her sudden death. Her carcass was found early in the morning by staffers, and a post-mortem examination will be performed soon to understand the cause.

This recent death has been followed by that of Noor Jehan, a 17-year-old African elephant of the Karachi Zoo, who died after suffering complications in her health in April. The four elephants — Sonia, Malika, Madhubala, and Noor Jehan — were brought to Karachi in 2009.
An international animal welfare organization, FOUR PAWS, conducted assessments in 2021, and the findings raised eyebrows regarding the health and living conditions of these elephants. After Noor Jehan died, Madhubala was the only African elephant remaining in captivity in any zoo in Pakistan.
