Savita Pawnday, the Executive Director of the Global Centre for the Responsibility to Protect (GCR2P), recently visited the Pakistan Mission to the United Nations. During her visit, she met with Ambassador Usman Jadoon, Pakistan’s acting Permanent Representative to the UN.
Their meeting provided the opportunity for Pawnday to brief Jadoon about the work of the Centre in mass atrocity prevention and other global protection efforts being undertaken currently.
They touched on the R2P relevance in the present agenda of the UN Security Council, with special attention to some of the immediate challenges around the world, notably Gaza and Kashmir.

Pawnday reiterated the Centre’s agenda to work towards international cooperation and dialogue in addressing some of these very pertinent issues in the light that R2P serves as a preventive and resolution tool.
The conversation reiterated the GCR2P’s focus on the protection of civilians and the international community’s responsibility to act against atrocities when necessary. All agreed these crises were complex, and efforts needed to be concerted to address the real root causes of such problems and develop effective responses.
This marks a step towards increased collaboration between the GCR2P and Pakistan while strengthening the importance of R2P in UN Security Council work.
