FIA Apprehends Beggars Posing as Umrah Pilgrims

The Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) apprehended a 10-member group of beggars attempting to travel to Saudi Arabia under the guise of Umrah pilgrims, as reported by ARY News. The group, which included seven women, was intercepted by FIA immigration officials at Karachi Airport. During questioning, the individuals could not answer basic questions about Umrah rituals, exposing their plan to engage in begging in Saudi Arabia.

According to FIA officials, the group lacked hotel reservations and sufficient funds for their stay, raising further suspicions. The arrested individuals were handed over to the Anti-Human Trafficking Cell for further investigation and legal proceedings.

In response to the growing issue of beggars tarnishing Pakistan’s image abroad, the government has introduced a stricter Umrah policy aimed at curbing such activities in Saudi Arabia. The Ministry of Religious Affairs announced several measures to address the problem, including requiring Umrah pilgrims to sign affidavits pledging not to beg. Violators of this pledge will face severe legal consequences.

Additionally, solo travel for Umrah pilgrims will be prohibited, mandating group travel to enhance accountability and reduce the likelihood of begging. Tour operators will also be required to collect affidavits from pilgrims, holding them accountable for ensuring compliance.

Sources indicate that these steps reflect the government’s commitment to addressing this issue, as the prevalence of begging has negatively impacted Pakistan’s relations with Saudi Arabia.
