On Sunday, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni declared her resignation as head of the European Conservatives and Reformists (ECR) group in the European Parliament. At the Atreju political festival organized by her party, Brothers of Italy (FdI), she said that she had done her bit and that a full-time president should be there for the group.

According to Meloni, the Italian right-wing coalition government’s stability would not hold beyond 2025, which she described as a key year for implementing important reforms. She spoke optimistically of the future of ECR, saying that it could see some candidates for the next president, including former Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki.
More topics in her speech included irregular migration and the agreement signed with Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama on 6 November 2023, which includes the transfer of irregular migration to two centers by Italy in Albania in a bid to combat illegal migration. Despite setbacks such as a Rome court ruling suspending the first two transfers, Meloni promised to fight past these obstacles and continue her battle against human trafficking.
