The provincial government of Punjab plans to unveil 102 electric buses to be launched in Rawalpindi. The project is worth Rs. 7 billion and will help in the reduction of pollution, provide cleaner transportation for citizens, and make public transport cleaner.
Electric buses will run on the 84-kilometer route along the 10 major public transport routes. The provincial government has earmarked Rs. 4.7 billion so far for this initiative. It is set to create a big impact by enhancing air quality in place of what was visible environmental pollution within the region.
Punjab Transport Minister Bilal Akbar Khan confirmed in June that the e-bus service will kick off next year. The buses will cater to the important routes – one from Taxila, Wah Cantt, and IJP Road to Octori 26, and another linking Daultala to Rawalpindi.

In August, Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz approved the enhancement of the project, increasing the number of electric buses to 200. The said approval comes after Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s visit to China where environmental issues were tackled in consideration of promoting green transportation along the country including Islamabad and some provinces.
International-standard electric buses will be offered for better services in public transport in Rawalpindi and the Rawalpindi Cantonment. It will also include constructing of new terminals, modern bus terminals, 100 bus terminals at the old GTS bus depot in Chohard Choke, new terminals at Adamjee Road in Rawalpindi Cantonment, and 40 electric chargers to support the electric fleet.
