The term of Greg Barclay, Chairman of the International Cricket Council (ICC), is expected to be extended by an additional month, delaying the anticipated leadership transition.
But the New Zealander, who announced in August his decision to step down, was initially to have ended his tenure on November 30. But the extension aims to facilitate a seamless handover of responsibilities.
India’s Jay Shah, elected unopposed as Barclay’s successor, was to officially take over as ICC Chairman on December 1.
This extension appears more like a temporary move made to safeguard continuity and to avert possible disruption in the transition during the bitterly contested 2025 Champions Trophy award.

The move further commits the organization to continuity as it deals with critical events in cricket and governance agendas.
In November 2020, Greg Barclay was elected to the position of Chairman of the ICC. In view of 11 votes out of the total of 16 in the second round of voting, he defeated his rival Imran Khwaja.
Shortly after being elected as Chairman of the ICC, Barclay resigned from the office of Chair of New Zealand Cricket to dedicate himself to the new job.
With a veteran background in cricket, stretching him several decades back, the Kiwi’s term might well be defined by how the next month unfolds under his leadership and its effects in the global cricketing sphere.
