On Monday, the Islamabad High Court (IHC) put forth an elaborate judgment regarding the withdrawal of an amount of Rs 1.37 billion from the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority’s (PTA) bank account by the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR). The judgment was given in favor of PTA, with the Federal Board of Revenue’s contention being challenged by Justice Babar Sattar.

The court has directed the FBR to resolve the PTA’s petition within two months while also imposing a fine of Rs0.1 million on the deputy commissioner of Inland Revenue Services (IRS). As per arguments made by PTA, the tax amount was withdrawn by FBR from its bank in the year 2018 without any prior notice. Justice Sattar remarked that this kind of deduction is illegal.
This case has a rather prominent serious issue over the FBR’s budget expenditure regarding the recognition of such withdrawals, without being judged as improper without following procedural compliance.
