Iran Embassy in Damascus Stormed Following Rebel Capture

Gunmen, whose identities are still unknown, stormed Iran embassy in Damascus on Sunday, reports Iranian state TV after the capital of Syria fell to rebels, which toppled Iranian-allied Bashar al-Assad. The embassy and the adjacent shops were attacked by an armed group that does not belong to the one now holding most areas in Syria: Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) as the name is.

A videotape that was circulating in Arab and Iranian media showed the interior of the embassy being rocked by different raiders rummaging through furniture and documents and ransacking some windows. However, Reuters has not been able to confirm such footage. On the other hand, Iran announced on Saturday that it was withdrawing embassy families, although it denied a report from the New York Times regarding pulling out military personnel. Hossein Akbari, ambassador of Iran to Syria, said that the remaining open embassy with five to six diplomats is busy holding high-level meetings monitoring the situation.

Iran’s state TV said that HTS guaranteed the safety of Sayeda Zeinab and Sayeda Ruqqaya shrines in Damascus from disturbance.
