Japan Announces $27.5 Million in Aid for Afghanistan

Japan announced humanitarian assistance of $27.5 million to Afghanistan. The announcement was made by the Japanese Embassy in Kabul after the World Food Programme (WFP) asked for funds for needy Afghan people.

The embassy announced via X that Japan has decided on an additional $27.5 million USD assistance for Afghanistan both in terms of humanitarian efforts as well as needs These are lifestyle changes for vulnerable Afghans.

The WFP pointed out that the situation is even worse, with close to 15 million people in Afghanistan not knowing where their next meal would come from. The fund that would enable the operations in the next six months is $718 million. In its recent report, the WFP indicated that within 25% of the population, approximately 11.6 million people are in crisis.

The report added that 14.8 million people will need food humanitarian assistance between November 2024 to March 2025. In 2025, an estimated 3.5 million children under five and 1.15 million pregnant and breastfeeding women will face acute malnutrition. This indicates an increase of 28% for moderately acute malnourished children and 1% for severely acute malnourished children compared to 2024.
