JCP Extends Constitutional Bench Tenure

During its latest meeting, the Judicial Commission of Pakistan (JCP), chaired by the Chief Justice of Pakistan, extended the term of the constitutional bench for an additional six months.

The commission also approved changes to its rules, most of which concern the procedural aspects. It is important to note here that new additional judges need no medical tests anymore. The seeking of intelligence reports on the candidates, on the other hand, will depend on the discretion of the commission.

Three names would be put up for consideration for the appointment of chief justices of high courts, and justification must be given if any of the senior-most judges is left out. Under the new rule, five names will be sent from the high courts to be appointed to the Supreme Court.
