Nine years as Prime Minister have finally caught up with Justin Trudeau as he resigns from office. He attributed this to the struggles inside the party, saying that it was high time he stepped out of the way as he could not offer the best alternative for the election ahead of time. Trudeau would continue exercising the office until a new leader of the Liberal Party is elected. His resignation has also come after much criticism and a drop in popularity on issues such as rising costs of living and concerns over immigration.

Trudeau’s time in power has had major highs and lows. Praise has been flung over him for introducing progressive policies such as the legalization of cannabis, the promotion of LGBTQ+ rights, and a carbon tax against the effects of climate change. His administration also had negative publicity in dealing with the SNC-Lavalin affair, the WE Charity scandal, and its response to the COVID-19 pandemic.
This will now start the process for the transfer of power from Trudeau to a new leader of the Liberal Party. This signals the end of an era in Canadian politics and challenges the new leader as they will have to attend to the problems leading to Trudeau’s downfall.
