Maryam Nawaz Sharif, Chief Minister of Punjab, has proposed the idea of establishing a joint working group with China to tackle environmental pollution in Punjab.
Speaking at a special meeting regarding climate change and the environment in Shanghai, she said, “Coming to China after absolutely 32 years, I found it to be an altogether new China, and that is what people call as a modern miracle of our times.”
Beijing-Punjab Work Group aims for knowledge sharing, policymaking, capacity-building, exchange of data, and transfer of technology, which will promote green urban planning, renewable energy, and e-transport development to achieve carbon emission reduction.

Maryam lauded China as an exceptional model, citing, “China has gone through an unimaginable transformation and this indeed stands as a lighthouse for the isolated countries like Pakistan and other developing countries. It is in fact the greatest living miracle of economics as it leads the world in infrastructure development, development of skilled human resources, and industrial capacity. Its success in curbing the environment and air pollution has become a wonder of the world.
He has also praised the Chinese Minister of Environment as a very capable expert on making the environment much better in China so that people in the country can now breathe air cleaner than before. Long-term commitments and effective measures on part of China, she added, must serve as an exemplary model for the whole world to tackle environmental issues.
