Mysterious Disease Claims 17 Lives in Jammu and Kashmir

The authorities in Jammu and Kashmir claim to be on a hunt for a mysterious disease that has claimed the lives of 17 souls, 13 of which are children, since the beginning of December. The deaths happened in a remote village known as Badhaal, in Rajouri. The village has been established as a containment zone, and around 230 people have been quarantined.

According to Amarjeet Singh Bhatia, head of Rajouri’s government medical college, the deceased had some brain and nervous system damage. Winter vacations will be canceled in order to tackle the medical scare situation.

Health Minister Jitendra Singh described that preliminary investigations indicate the deaths might have been toxin rather than infection-related. The search for the specific toxin is ongoing while other investigations are focused on possible foul play.

Another report emerged from Pune, where 73 odd cases have been reported of Guillain Barre Syndrome. GBS attacks the peripheral nerves with an immune reaction, and it has affected 26 women, with 14 patients in serious condition on ventilator support.
