Pakistan Begins 8th Term as Non-Permanent UNSC Member

The flag of Pakistan was hoisted on Thursday by the Non-Permanent Member State that is going to hold the eighth term for 2025-26 at the United Nations Security Council (UNSC).

This presentation was supposed to have five other flags for a total of six non-permanent members newly elected ones were Pakistan, Denmark, Greece, Panama, and Somalia. They succeeded Japan, Ecuador, Malta, Mozambique, and Switzerland, all of which completed their terms on December 31, 2024.

At the time of hoisting the flag, the Alternate Permanent Representative of Pakistan, Ambassador Asim Iftikhar Ahmad, stated that Pakistan is firmly committed to the principles of the UN Charter in terms of maintenance of international peace and promoting equality of rights and also self-determination. He said that Pakistan is very much inclined towards upholding similar voices in front of the oppressed humans and at the same time it promotes multilateralism in dealing with global challenges. He stressed the need to address root causes at the same time involving dialogue and confidence-building at regional and global levels.

He reiterated that Pakistan reaffirms its commitment to pursuing peaceful solutions to the agenda of the Council through conflict prevention, peacekeeping, and peacebuilding for realizing sustainable peace. Pakistan’s term would also entail rigorous adherence to international law and the Security Council’s decisions to lessen the agony of persons in conflict.

In July, Pakistan will assume the chair of the UNSC, which will allow it to elaborate upon the agenda of the Council. Besides that, it will also hold membership in the Islamic State (ISIS) and Al Qaeda Sanctions Committee and will designate the listed individuals as terrorists for imposing sanctions.

Fifteen members comprise the UNSC—five of which are permanent members and ten are non-permanent members—and it is empowered to take binding decisions, impose sanctions, and even allow the use of force to maintain world peace and security.
