Pakistan Faces Severe Food Crisis Amid Climate Challenges by 2030

Such impending food crisis hanging over the country states that up to 50 percent of the population could face food insecurity by the year 2030, predicted experts.

The warning came at a 2-days symposium at which the topic read; “Climate Change, Agriculture, Human Nutrition and Development in Pakistan.” It was hosted by the Institute for Global Health and Development(IGHD) working in collaboration with Sustainable Development Solutions Network Pakistan (SDSN).

Famed professor and AKU faculty member Dr. Zulfiqar Bhutta said: “The Indus system is the backbone of agriculture for 90 percent of Pakistan. Glacial melting and erratic rainfall are pushing the country towards serious food insecurity”; really, he said.

Malnutrition and disaster strikes were the concerns raised by the critics related to the changing weather in the context of women most hit by its effects, given that they form a populace in agricultural work yet are limited in the number of decisions they make.

The Higher Education Commission Commission chairman Dr Mukhtar Ahmed took this opportunity to announce that a national platform would be established to bring together all experts in health, agriculture, and food security to address the issue of climatic changes through collaborative efforts. Among other things proposed by experts were biotechnology applications to improve crop yields as well as cost-effective investments in climate to reduce risks.

Dr. Bhutta implored immediate intervention; he stressed that proactive approaches were urgently needed. “Tackling climate change requires evidence-based approaches and innovative collaborations for a sustainable future,” he stated.
