Pakistan witnesses longest night and shortest day of 2024

Pakistan had its longest night of the year with a winter solstice. This astrological event happened on December 21, which is momentous in the Northern Hemisphere.

It is said in a statement issued by the Space and Upper Atmosphere Research Commission (SUPARCO):

“This happens once every year when the axial tilt of the Earth places the Northern Hemisphere farthest away from the sun, thus resulting in the shortest day and at the same time, the longest night.”

The typical time at which winter solstice occurs is December 21 or 22: a point in the path of Earth as it rotates in the sun around which daylight in the Northern Hemisphere begins to increase gradually.

Most people will tell you that solstice is hardly a marker of change in season per se, but one that has inspired much reflection with celebration as the event is observed worldwide through cultural and spiritual traditions, symbolizing renewal and the returning light.

Now, as the days grow long, this astronomical event marks the beginning of a slow march to spring.
