Canadian PM Justin Trudeau Faces Growing Resignation Demands

Canadians are now pushing Prime Minister Justin Trudeau for his resignation as he maintains a public and media silence. As per a report by the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC), more than 50 Ontario lawmakers from Trudeau’s own party, the Liberal Party, during a conference call on Saturday, came to a consensus on their views calling for the prime minister’s resignation. This group constitutes around one-third of the Liberal parliamentary party, which commands 153 seats in Parliament.

On the other hand, New Democrat Party (NDP) leader Jagmeet Singh, who lends support to the minority Liberals, announced his plans to call for a vote of no-confidence at the earliest opportunity triggering an election. The NDP, along with the other opposition parties, namely, the Conservatives and Bloc Quebecois, are rallying now more than ever for Trudeau to step down, especially during this time of rising food prices and housing shortages.

Singh said in a public letter, “The Liberals don’t deserve another chance. That is why the NDP will vote to bring this government down.” The future for Trudeau after nine years in office is looking increasingly grim, especially considering the polls are telling a story of doom for the Liberals. An Angus Reid Institute year-end poll found that Trudeau himself has only a 28% approval rating.

The louder calls for Trudeau’s resignation came after Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland herself resigned on December 16, with a public letter, exactly that day she was supposed to deliver the fall budget. Freeland stated that Trudeau told her on December 13 she was being replaced and mentioned a minor cabinet role as an alternative. She rejected that cabinet position and instead put up her resignation letter on social media, stating, “Upon reflection, I have concluded that the only honest and viable path is for me to resign from the Cabinet.”

Such political revelations have left Trudeau playing hide and seek, avoiding comments altogether. He is apparently contemplating his political future while spending the Christmas holidays with his family and preparing to take a skiing trip to British Columbia.
