Pakistan on this day becomes one of the countries that observe International Migrants’ Day with the world. It acknowledges the colossal contributions of migrants and reaffirms commitment to their rights and dignity and real promotion of their welfare. For decades, Pakistan has opened its arms to migrants and prides itself on the increasing number of Pakistanis who live abroad. Whether in education, employment, business, or tourism, the overseas Pakistani has underscored himself as the ambassador of the nation, and in turn, the nation’s global reputation was enhanced.
Migrants not only make home countries grow and further their prosperity, but they also become a lifeline to their native homelands. Remittances by overseas Pakistani workers assume a primary role in the economic stability of Pakistan. During the first two months of the fiscal year 2024-25, remittances amounting to $5.94 billion came into the country as a reflection of the devotion and love of expatriates for their homeland.
The Government of Pakistan is at the helm of welfare and empowerment issues for overseas Pakistanis. Importantly, steps have been taken to ease them, preserve their rights, and present timely justice. The enactment of the Overseas Pakistanis Property Act 2024 is a historic milestone for securing the rights and properties of expatriates. In so far otherwise a worthy recognition of the contribution was also assigned for the Mohsin-e-Pak Awards, which is stated to be a significant national honor in recognizing services of overseas Pakistanis for both Pakistan and their host communities.

While we celebrate the migrant’s strength, resilience, and achievements, we must also note the contrary realities, such as alienation from home, exploitation, and discrimination. It is our collective responsibility to get protection, dignity, and inclusive access for overseas Pakistanis whatever place they occupy in the world. This International Migrants Day is a renewal in commitment towards the same goal: to fight for the rights of the migrant, against all forms of exploitation, and to create a space where migration becomes a sign of opportunity and progress toward a brighter future.
