Shehbaz Sharif Calls for Urgent Action to Protect Glaciers

The Prime Minister of Pakistan, Mr. Shehbaz Sharif, has called for immediate action worldwide to stop glaciers from melting because he highlighted glaciers as being crucial for the existence of human beings.

Urgent Call to Protect Glaciers

Highlighting glaciers as a lifeline for the survival of mankind, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has called for urgent global action and coordinated efforts to prevent the melting of glaciers. While addressing a high-level event, ‘Glaciers 2025: Actions for Glaciers’ organized by Tajik President Emamoli Rahmon, the Prime Minister called upon all countries to come forward to protect the glaciers from contamination and the thin ice cover by taking practical and resolute steps.

Pakistan’s Commitment

Emphasizing the need to protect these invaluable natural resources, Prime Minister Sharif said that Pakistan is prepared to engage with the world. He added that he is convinced that the Glacier 2025 initiative has come at the right time for addressing the issues raised by the globally important and ever-melting glaciers. Glaciers possess seventy percent of the world’s fresh water and even more maintain its ecosystem.

Impact on Pakistan

In relation to Pakistan, Sharif brought to attention the fact that the country has more than seven thousand glaciers, which contribute around sixty to eighty percent of the river Indus system flow, which in turn supports almost ninety percent of the population’s agriculture with over 200 million people dependent upon it. He cautioned the audience about the rate of rise in temperatures causing the glaciers to melt alarmingly, resulting in the creation of over three thousand glacial lakes in Northern Pakistan, which is now a serious threat. Outburst flooding of about 33 of these lakes can potentially displace over 7 million people living in such regions.

Such consequences for glaciers, so jeopardizing for mankind, provide all means to take measures and organize efforts on an international level so that these organic resources will also be present tomorrow. With them, a better way of living for all will be achievable.
