PMD Forecasts Rain and Snowfall to Alleviate Smog in Pakistan.

According to the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD), rain wind thunderstorms along with snowfall in the upper parts of the country will occur from December 8-14 under the influence of cold wave conditions to help mitigate smog in troubled areas.

The upper parts of the country will be affected by a westerly wave from December 7, which will lower daytime as well as nighttime temperatures considerably. In Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Gilgit-Baltistan, and Kashmir, daytime temperatures would dip 4-6 degrees below normal while 5-7 degrees below normal in Balochistan and Sindh. In some places of Punjab, frost and cold gusty winds are found in Sindh, Balochistan, and parts of Punjab.

Rain-wind/thunderstorms, along with snowfall over the hills, are expected in the area from December 7 (night) to December 11. The area includes Chitral, Dir, Swat, Malakand, Buner, Shangla, Mansehra, Abbottabad, Kohistan, Astore, Ghizer, Gilgit, Hunza, Skardu, Neelum Valley, Muzaffarabad, Rawalakot, Kotli, Haveli, and Bagh.

Light to moderate rain-wind/thunderstorm over the hills is expected in areas including Murree, Galliyat, Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Attock, Jhelum, Chakwal, Sialkot, Hafizabad, Gujranwala, Lahore, Sargodha, Khushab, Faisalabad, and Jhang from December 7 (night) to December 8 (afternoon).

The PMD advises farmers to plan their activities according to the weather forecast with regard to frost conditions, while citizens are advised to avoid excessive time outdoors in cold, windy nighttime, and morning hours. Tourists and travelers visiting hilly areas should exercise caution during this period. All concerned authorities have been instructed to stay alert and take necessary measures so that any untoward situation is prevented, particularly in northern areas.
