Proposal for Five New Tehsils in Rawalpindi Division

The Rawalpindi Revenue Department has proposed the establishment of five new tehsils in the Rawalpindi Division to the Punjab Government with the justification that it is an urgent necessity to address administrative and service-delivery issues.

Proposed Timeline and Distribution

A budget for the above proposal has also been reserved for implementation during the fiscal year 2025-26. Proposals include:

Two new tehsils would be created in Rawalpindi District.
One new tehsil would be created in the districts of Attock, Jhelum, and Chakwal.
The proposal follows a Punjab government circular sent three months ago to the deputy commissioners of all 42 districts calling for feasibility reports for new tehsils for more than a single district. Most districts reported a need for at least one or two new tehsils, which has prompted the government to advance their plan for a further change.

Case for New Tehsil in Rawalpindi District

The Dy. Commissioner, Rawalpindi, has strongly made out a case before the Senior Member, Board of Revenue, reiterating that an independent tehsil is warranted in the district. He argued that with the present size and population of Rawalpindi, it has become increasingly difficult to deliver basic services effectively.

Currently, Rawalpindi District consists of seven tehsils:

  • Rawalpindi
  • Kahuta
  • Kallar Syedan
  • Gujar Khan
  • Taxila
  • Saddar
  • Cantonment

With the addition of two more tehsils, the total number of tehsils shall reach nine. Historically, the Murree and Kotli Sattian tehsils formed a part of this district, which today have been taken off to make Murree District an independent administrative unit.

Possible Advantages of New Tehsils

The goals of the newly defined tehsils include the following:

  • Decentralize administration and relieve bureaucratic bottlenecks.
  • Higher accessibility to key facilities such as healthcare, education, and law, especially in rural or congested areas.
  • Which relates to urbanization growth-related challenges in the area.
  • Better resource allocation and management at the local level.

Wider Regional Effects

Apart from these small extensions, the Punjab government is contemplating at least two new districts to give another boost to administrative efficiency. The service delivery will improve under this step and also balanced development across the division would be further promoted.

As this fiscal year 2025-26 is approaching, everybody is looking forward to these proposals to contribute towards enhancing the well-being of life for the inhabitants and addressing poor governance issues lingering in this part of the world.
