PTI’s Asad Qaiser Criticizes Supreme Court’s Decision on Military Courts

Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) senior leader Asad Qaiser has expressed regret over the Supreme Court’s decision under which civilian cases may be tried in military courts. Speaking to media representatives at the High Court, Qaiser emphasized the party’s stance on an independent judiciary and the rule of law, saying, “We want an independent judiciary, we want the rule of law in this country. It is regrettable that the Supreme Court has allowed households of civilians to be tried in military courts”.

Qaiser also pointed out the cases lodged against PTI members by the state, which he termed grounds for concern. “All of us are really very sympathetic towards the cases the government has lodged against us,” he said. He pointed to three main issues on the party’s agenda, namely: treatment of PTI workers, the release of detained individuals, and a judicial investigation of the incidents of May 9 and November 24.

Qaiser lambasted the many cases against PTI chairman Imran Khan, calling them revengeful. He further pointed out that the bulk made important cases lose their value, saying, “So many cases have been made that their elements have lost importance. Cases for terrorism, murder, and treason have been registered against parliamentarians”.

Qaiser reasserted the peaceful demonstrations that PTI will still carry out. He said, “Peaceful protest is the right of every citizen”. Furthermore, he emphasized the fact that “No member of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf has broken even a single flower pot”. He concluded with a statement asserting that indeed, the struggle was directed for the supremacy of the Constitution and laws.
